Get into the travel mood with Senryu! Results of the Fukuoka Airport Senryu Contest 2024 announced!

Fukuoka Airport held a senryu contest again this year.
The theme is "Let's go on a trip!"

We received a total of 1,417 haiku poems, a huge number of works. Thank you to everyone who submitted entries. We have now decided on the 27 winning haiku poems and are pleased to announce them.
Additionally, we have received an overall review of the contest from Ms. Natsuko Hagiwara, President of the Fukuoka Prefecture Senryu Association, who is a judge for the contest, as well as her selection comments for the Grand Prix, Fukuoka Airport Director's Award, and Fukuoka International Airport Award, which we would like to introduce here as well.

General comments by Natsuko Hagiwara

The streets of Fukuoka are bustling again, with people and carry-on bags coming and going. We were able to appreciate many poems about enjoyable journeys and journeys in the sky. Many of the poems were full of individuality, and each one was an excellent piece of senryu that was difficult to choose between.
Traveling excites us with the scenery and people we encounter in various parts of Japan and foreign cities, and our curiosity grows as we want to see, eat, and learn more.
The purposes of the works in this collection are varied, including visiting one's parents, seeing the aurora, a gourmet trip, a family trip, a solo trip, and a first air trip, but I believe that readers can empathize and be moved by the messages that are expressed in each and every line.
I think that's what senryu is.
Another feature of airport senryu is that it contains many katakana expressions that give off a sense of newness and energy, such as insta, takeoff, deck, taipa, and cost performance. I was also happy to come across senryu that were full of humor.
Finally, there were many poems that described the joys of airport lobbies. Airports, where people can now travel freely, seem to be filled with dreams of travel.
